Covid-19 Updates

The latest from UNC Greensboro

January 07, 2022

Spartan Community:

As we prepare for the start of the spring semester, it’s important to acknowledge the significant spread of the Omicron variant, and our personal responsibility to protect ourselves and our fellow Spartans.

Here is what we know:

  • According to the CDC, vaccinated and boosted individuals who test positive for Omicron are likely to have nonexistent or mild-to-moderate symptoms.
  • Those who are unvaccinated, or who have other medical conditions, are at risk for serious symptoms and hospitalization (as has been the case since the beginning of the pandemic).
  • We should all expect an increase in positivity rates within our community, as we are seeing rates increase in the county and across the state.

With the rapid spread of the Omicron variant, UNC Greensboro is adopting the CDC’s quarantine and isolation guidelines, announced on Jan. 4, 2022, effective immediately.

The new guidelines call for a five-day isolation or quarantine period for individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 or have been in close contact with someone who is COVID-19 positive. But there are many caveats to the guidance. We encourage you to learn more by reading the updated Isolation and Quarantine flyer and I&Q flow chart; both are available on the COVID-19 website.

Expectations for Spring

We ask for your continued vigilance in adhering to the following safety measures and community health guidelines:

  • All individuals are required to wear face coverings indoors, regardless of vaccination status, except when students are in their private residence hall rooms. Following CDC recommendations, we strongly encourage the use of surgical masks instead of cloth masks. Surgical masks will be made available at designated on-campus locations.
  • All students living in residence halls must be tested before move-in, regardless of vaccination status. Residential students have received an email from Housing and Residence Life with testing details.
  • Students, faculty, and staff must show proof of vaccination or comply with the mandatory testing program.
  • We request that all members of the campus community self-report COVID-19 infections and exposures during winter break and throughout the semester.
  • If students test positive or experience COVID-19 symptoms during the spring semester, they will be required to self-report and isolate. During the isolation period, students should not attend in-person classes or other public events. After self-reporting, students should contact their instructors and request accommodations so they can continue to make progress in their classes.

When possible, we strongly encourage virtual meetings and gatherings. Student clubs and organizations should consult the current guidelines provided by Campus Activities and Programs (CAP) for additional guidance on events and activities.
